As the largest theatre in the region, Turku City Theatre offers performances that appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Our program choices are guided by a desire to tell compelling stories that many can relate to. Local stories are of particular interest to Turku residents, which is why they are frequently included in our repertoire. We also produce many new works and Finnish premieres, with a particular focus on musicals. Most of our plays are in Finnish, but musicals (and occasionally other plays or visiting performances) are subtitled in English or don’t contain dialogue.

Annually, approximately 150–200 people work at the theater. Turku City Theatre produces 5–10 premieres and several guest performances each year, totalling about 400 performances annually. The theatre attracts around 140,000 visitors each year. The theatre also hosts public events and rents out spaces to event organisers when the schedule allows.

The theatre building was renovated in 2017 and expanded from two to three permanent stages (Päänäyttämö Pieni näyttämö and Sopukka). In the summer the theatre operates in Naantali’s Theatre Emma. Our restaurant Viides näyttämö  (aptly translated in English to the Fifth Stage) welcomes food lovers and theatre visitors alike with a menu comprising the best seasonal and local ingredients.
