A traditional repertoire theatre situated in Finland’s oldest city, Turku City Theatre stages everything from plays to musicals to concerts. We provide unique experiences. Take a seat and let us entertain you!

Turku City Theatre is the official repertoire theatre of the City of Turku. We stage 8-10 plays of our own per year, but also house a vast array of visiting plays, concerts and other performances.

The theatre is located by the beautiful Aura river in the heart of Turku. The theatre building was renovated in 2017 and the building has expanded to encompass three permanent stages. In addition to the Main Stage (Päänäyttämö), the theatre comprises of the Small Stage (Pieni näyttämö) and the Nook (Sopukka). Our restaurant Viides näyttämö (aptly translates to the Fifth Stage) welcomes gourmands and theatre visitors alike with a menu comprised of the best seasonal and local ingredients.

Anything in English?

The majority of our plays are in Finnish, but musicals (and occasionally other plays) are surtitled in English. This season, English speakers are in for a treat, as we return to Middle-Earth in the Hobbit. This ambitious endeavour based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel has been adapted for the stage by Sami Keski-Vähälä and will be directed by Mikko Kouki. Get carried away on the adventure of a lifetime, as the hobbit Bilbo is lured along on a quest to take back the Lonely Mountain (and some treasure) from the dragon Smaug. Some performances of the play will be surtitled in English. Our fall season also welcomes Hiljaiset sillat (the musical), a Finnish staging of the Bridges of Madison County – the musical. The Main stage will be enveloped in heat as this whirlwind romance takes the stage. All shows of Hiljaiset sillat will be surtitled in English.

We also offer guided tours of the theatre in Finnish and English. Make sure to book your English tour in advance, as availability may vary.
